Women Without Borders - The Lure of Syria - Mothers of Foreign Fighters
Young people join radical extremist groups for a myriad of reasons, ranging from a search for purpose in life to the promise of love. These decisions affect everyone on the local, national, and international levels, and they especially hurt their mothers. ‘Lure of Syria: Mothers of Foreign Fighters’ features mothers of children who joined radical groups in Syria. They reflect on how children become indoctrinated, what it feels like to be a mother left behind, and how they hope to use their experience to make a positive change. As one mother noted, ‘I don’t have enough energy to be angry. I would like to take this energy to do something good and productive, and it’s a way for me to keep my son alive’.
